Tips for Visiting Residents
Children & pets are especially welcome. Find a quite place, perhaps one of the Lounges, encourage the resident to get out of their room as much as possible. Take the resident out for a walk or to a local coffee shop or restaurant. Keep the conversation light. The stimulation of a few funny stories & a smile goes a long way to make a visit enjoyable. Bring a thermos of juice or tea or pick some up in the Drop-In Centre & have a “picnic” outside or in one of the Lounges. Reminisce about the early years of the resident’s life. Help them remember the songs they sang, the friends they had, what they like at school or any traveling they did. You will be surprised at what you will learn. If the resident only wants to talk about going home, find out what they remember of home & continue the conversation based on these memories. Bring in a photo album & go through it with the resident. Have all visitors sign a guest book for the resident. For variety, try to visit over mealtime. There is no extra charge for the use of our private Dining Room, but we do require 24 hours notice. Read recent letters, cards and or newspapers to the resident to stimulate conversation. Help the resident write a letter or note. |
